3v3 Ice Hockey Rules & Regulations

The Burlington Pond – 3 on 3 Rules

  • Teams must be ready 10 minutes before game time (games may start early).
  • 2-minute warm-up, 2 periods, 21-minute running time games, 1.5-minute buzzer 
  • Points: Win = 2, Shootout loss = 1, Loss = 0.
  • Only rostered players may participate. Use of ineligible players = forfeit. 

 Gameplay Rules

  • 3 Goals Per Period Rule - A player may score a maximum of 3 goals per period.

  • Any 4th goal scored by the same player in the same period will be disallowed.

  • A warning will be issued for the first violation. Any repeat violation will result in a penalty.

  • This rule does not apply if:

    • The player’s team is trailing by 5 or more goals, or

    • The goal was scored on a penalty shot.

5+ Goal Differential Rule

  • If a team is trailing by 5 or more goals, they may add a 4th skater.

  • The scoreboard will display a maximum goal differential of 5.

  • The official score will be recorded by the timekeeper.

Zone Clearing After Stoppages

  • After a goal, all players must clear the red line before re-engaging in play.

  • After a save or whistle, all players must clear to the blue line before re-engaging.

  • No Icing and No Slap Shots

Shift Change (Buzzer Rule)

  • When the shift buzzer sounds, players on the ice must not touch the puck.

  • A warning will be issued for a first violation.

  • A repeat violation will result in a penalty shot.

Double-Shifting Players

  • Players who remain on the ice for consecutive shifts must still clear the required zone (red or blue line) before playing the puck. 


 Penalties

  • All penalties result in a penalty shot for the non-offending team

  • The penalty differential is applied at the end of the game only if it affects the outcome.

  • Any player who receives 3 penalties in a single game (excluding stick infractions, if applicable) will be ejected for the remainder of the game

  • Example: 4 penalties vs 2 penalties = 2 penalty shots awarded.


 Tie Games

  • No game shall end in a tie. A winner must be declared. 

  • If tied: penalty shots first, then sudden-death shootout if needed.

  • Three shooters marked with an asterisk before the game.

  • All players must rotate before any repeat shooters.


 Conduct

  • Fighting will result in an automatic suspension (zero-tolerance policy).

  • Players must demonstrate good sportsmanship at all times; showboating is not permitted.

  • Verbal abuse of referees or interference with officials or timekeepers is prohibited.

  • Coaches are not permitted to enter the timekeeper’s room.
